Protecting Heritage

Canada’s rich history of innovation lives in the artifacts – from full-size aircraft to microchips – and in the stories of the innovators who researched, engineered, and used these ground-breaking objects and ideas. Across our three Museums, we restore and preserve these artifacts, while also promoting and celebrating their stories and how they affect Canadians and our shared culture.

Every artifact has a story. We encourage you to discover these stories on the Collecting and Connecting blog created by the Curatorial staff across the Museums. Through collecting they create a material legacy for Canadians; through the act of collecting they connect with Canadians and help connect Canadians with each other. Collecting is not just collection building, it is community building.

We are hard at work making this Collection more accessible to Canadians through our Digitizing the Collection programs. From releasing open data to rendering the Collection for 3D printing, we are successfully making Canada’s heritage accessible for more Canadians.

Beyond the material collection, we are also deeply committed to preserving and sharing the stories of Canadians. Young film students and the Canada Aviation and Space Museum are working together on The Legacy Project. This documentary will feature stories of courage, friendship, and loss from more than 35 individuals who lived through the Second World War, including many members of the RCAF. Once completed, The Legacy Project will be available for free download for teachers across Canada to use in their classrooms and Remembrance Day ceremonies.

This project is just one example of unique initiatives that the Museums create to preserve, celebrate, and share stories of Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

Whether you love locomotives, wish to honour Canadian heroes, or want to help give an artifact a digital presence, your contribution to Protecting Heritage and Sharing Culture will be an investment in ensuring our rich past has its rightful place in Canada’s future.
